Rather than wait for month end, I am updating the Year List now, as I have some decent Wi-Fi. Today I got to add both the Yellow-eyed Penguin, as well as a huge surprise, the Giant Northern Petrel. That takes my Year List up to 265, with 63 of them coming from New Zealand alone! Of those 63, 55 of them are all new life birds for me.

Time to play catch up
As many of you know by now, Jeanne and I have been out on the start of our round the world Adventure! After getting out of the freezing cold of Seattle, we caught a flight to Los Angels, then to Auckland, New Zealand. From there we immediately boarded a plane to Christchurch, New Zealand. We are going to have nearly 2 months to travel the two islands, so we have rented a small RV and hit the road. But not after a great visit with our family friend, Neville. Neville, it turns out, is a superb bird guide, incognito as a professor of Psychology at Canterbury University. He was an exceptional, and very patient host, not only picking us up at the airport, ferrying us all over the Christchurch area, but them dropping us off at the RV center. His knowledge of the history, both past and recent of the area, as well as the local wildlife are incredible.
While in Christchurch, I was able to add 32 new birds to my Life List, and here are few of the photos I got.

Walking on water, Mallard style
Well, as you can see, they were actually napping on water, frozen water that is. This is a small group of wild Mallards the frequent the pond near Jeanne's Dad's house. Once it was frozen, they just did not seem to concerned. Just to darned cold for me I tell ya!
